Beating the villain on Jingzhe

by TongPik Ha 22 May 2026

The annual awakening of insects (Jingzhe) symbolizes a significant moment of natural revival. The Jingzhe period marks the beginning of the second lunar month, Xinmao, when all things come to life, and people's emotions and vitality also increase. During this time, specific customs such as "da xiaoren" (beating the petty person) become a ritual for people to counteract disharmonious external factors.

Jingzhe is one of the 24 solar terms. On this day, the spring thunder awakens all dormant things. According to the ancient text "Yue Ling Qi Shi Er Hou Ji Jie," "Jingzhe" refers to the sound of spring thunder and the start of insect activity, which not only implies a change in season but also symbolizes the arrival of new life and hope. Therefore, Jingzhe signifies a time for new beginnings, suitable for self-reflection and clearing negative emotions.

This month is the Xinmao month. For those born in the Year of the Rabbit, this period particularly requires attention as they may face more "petty person" (xiaoren) issues. In 2026, those born in the Year of the Rabbit will encounter Tai Sui, meaning they will face various challenges, especially in interpersonal relationships. Additionally, health issues also need to be noted. Therefore, it is recommended that friends born in the Year of the Rabbit donate blood or have a dental cleaning this month to help ward off blood-related disasters and effectively offset possible negative impacts, hoping to eliminate troubles brought by "petty persons."

On the day of Jingzhe, many places perform the "da xiaoren" ritual. "Xiaoren" refers to those who negatively impact our lives, possibly colleagues, friends, or certain strangers. The "da xiaoren" ritual originates from folk beliefs, where people believe that by driving away these "xiaoren," their luck can return to normal.

In the "da xiaoren" ritual, specific items are usually used, such as paper effigies, talismans, and wooden sticks. During the ritual, people "beat" these paper effigies with wooden sticks, symbolizing the expulsion of harmful negative energies. Psychologically, this act can effectively reduce stress and anxiety. Participants can vent their anger and dissatisfaction towards the "xiaoren," thereby achieving emotional release.

Always remember that "petty persons are always inferior to oneself." Therefore, doing your best, staying away from petty persons, and maintaining distance between both parties are crucial. Learning to set boundaries for yourself can effectively prevent the influence of petty persons, allowing you to maintain appropriate distance in social settings and avoid unnecessary trouble. The arrival of Jingzhe also represents the expulsion of negative energy and the hope of new beginnings.

During the Jingzhe period, it is also important to emphasize communication with others to enhance mutual trust and understanding. Through the exchange of positive energy, misunderstandings and conflicts can be reduced, leading to more harmonious interpersonal relationships. Jingzhe is not only the revival of nature but also gives us an opportunity to reshape ourselves in life and expand to a better future. I wish everyone to stay away from all people and things that make them feel negative energy, and never let unnecessary people and things affect your life.
